Grateful Dead Archive To Be Preserved Online
SANTA CRUZ (CBS 5 / AP)

The world's largest collection of Grateful Dead memorabilia has found new life on the Internet, where the psychedelic rock band's recordings, photos and collectibles will be preserved online.

The Grateful Dead Archive is currently housed at the McHenry Library on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus.

The school's library has received $615,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to photograph the collection items and upload them to a new Web site, The Virtual Terrapin Station.

Once uploaded, the public will be able to access the collection online and contribute their own digital photos.

The extensive collection includes thousands of pictures, toys, posters, journals, show tickets and other pieces of paraphernalia donated by band members and fans.

I just read about this last night and what fantastic news this is! I'm glad that a national foundation has recognized the importance and the uniqueness of the Grateful Dead vault.

How many other bands can claim to have such a thorough record of their history as well as of their fans?

Right now all of this stuff is spread throughout the web and it will be nice to have a concentrated source to use when doing some digging.

Wonder how this will affect the availability of soundboard recordings... for streaming and otherwise...

"recordings, photos and collectibles will be preserved online"

This should make for a very interesting website indeed for everyone - especially for those of us in Maine and elsewhere that don't make it to Santa Cruz all that often.

I've heard talk about streaming shows on that website, but we already have GD Radio and Sirius doing it now.

Need some booze? There is a 7-11 store on Cardiff Place just feet away from the entrance to the UCSC campus. Oh boy, now you can celebrate 4/20 in the Great Meadow, getting stoned with cast of thousands, and then go high stepping to the virtual Terrapin Station...
